PART 1 (Interview)

Time:4-5 minutes
Now, in this first part of the test I'm going to ask you some questions about ........ .

Q. Can you tell me your full name, please?
A. My name is Rakib Hassan. You can call me with my first name which is Rakib.

Q. Can I see your ID card, please?
A. Yes, sure. Here you are.

Q. Do you work or are you a student?
A. I am a student. I am doing my graduation and hopefully, I will work after I finish my Master's degree.

Q. Tell me about your studies.
A. Well, I am doing my Bachelor degree in Dhaka University in Accounting. I stay at the University campus and attend my classes almost every day except Friday. Since my major is Accounting, I need to spend a considerable amount of time on my study table. My teachers are very experienced and they are renowned professors in the university. Their way of teaching is very nice and attractive. The easy access to the internet in my room has made it possible to search and find study materials and related books very easily. This helps me a lot in my studies. I need to submit a lot of assignment every week and I love to spend time in the University library that comprises a huge collection of books related to my study.

Q. What do you like most about your studies?
A. I love my subject as it offers a great chance to learn how the accounting and finance of an organisation works, how important the accounting in Banking and in other financial organisations is and so on. Apart from that, the Accounting Math are very interesting and thought-provoking. I like my classes and classmates and I love to update a blog related to accounting. My studies enable me to learn new things very frequently and also ensure to fulfil my dream to work as a renowned Accountant of a large organisation.

Q. Are there any things you don’t like about your studies?
A. I like almost every aspect of my studies. However, sometimes the classes become monotonous as there are lengthy lectures that require our utmost attentions. Unlike many other subjects, we are bound by the rules than the creativity and I do not like these two aspects of my studies.

Q. What qualifications or certificates do you hope to get?
A. I would finish my graduation and then study to get my Masters and PhD degree. Apart from that, I wish to be a certified Accountant which I would finish along with my Master's degree.

Q. Do you enjoy watching films? Why/ why not?
A. I love to watch movies. Whenever I get time, I rent a DVD and watch it on my computer. The movies are great sources of entertainment as well as knowledge. The recent movies come with many special effects and many movies are based on historical events or characters. Those types of movies are very effective in terms of learning about the past. Many movies have underlying deep meanings and address our sufferings, joys, morality and evil side. We can learn a lot from the movies and in fact, I believe that movies are a great tool to shape our mentality and society.

Q. How often do you watch films?
A. I watch 2-3 movies per week. During the exam, I don’t get the chance to watch movies but after my exam, I often watch movies more than my usual frequency.

Q. Do people generally prefer watching films at home or at the cinema? Why?
A. I think most people prefer watching movies at home nowadays. With the introduction of Internet, smart TVs, Satellite channels and 3D movies, people can nowadays have a great movie viewing experience at home. Watching movies at home is far more convenient and less expensive than watching cinema in a movie theatre.

Q. Would you like to be in a film?
A. I don’t think so. I am a great fan of movies but acting in a movie is something I have never considered. I think like every other Art and profession, acting requires a great deal of passion, rehearsal, natural talent and appearance. I do not have any slightest intention to act in a movie as I don’t have any of the qualities a good actor should have.

PART 3 (Discussion)

Time:4-5 minutes
We've been talking about ............. , and I'd now like to ask you some questions related to this.

Q. Do you think what children see on TV affects their behaviour?
A. Yes, I agree with the notion that children get affected from the TV programmes they watch. Children learn things very fast and TV programmes have a great influence on shaping their behaviour, thinking and attitude. I remember mimicking my favourite cartoon heroes when I was a child and that is, in fact, true for all human beings. Children psychology catches the things they see and listen. And that’s why they are likely to be affected positively as well as negatively from the TV programmes they watch.

Q. In your opinion do children watch too much TV?
A. I don’t think that children nowadays watch too much TV. Though they like watching cartoons and other TV programmes a lot, the parents often forbid them to watch TV too much. Due to the pressure of study and with the easy access to computer games, children nowadays do not have the scope and interest to watch TV all the time. But I would agree that there must be many children who watch it more than they should.

Q. Do you think there are too many foreign films on TV? Why?
A. I think people nowadays have satellite connection with channels from different countries and that’s why they have plenty of options to watch movies made in foreign countries. The globalisation has also contributed to promoting the foreign movies and many people prefer to watch Hollywood movies over their local movies. So I would agree that there are too many foreign movies on TV but it’s also true that a viewer always has the chance to watch movies made in his/ her own country.

Q. Should the Government control what we watch?
A. I think in this era of democracy and free speech it would be a bad idea for any government to try to control or impose a restriction on our TV viewing activity. First of all, the Government would have to face a huge criticism and pressure from citizens. Second, a democratic government should never try to impose this on the citizens as that would make them act like an autocratic government.

However, if a particular TV channel broadcasts any program that might be offensive for the country and its tradition, too much violent and uncensored, I would opine that the government can ban this channel.

In short, I would say the control should be for the people’s benefit and to control any possible conflict but not to take away people’s freedom.

Thank you. That's the end of the IELTS Speaking Test.
